The artist and free electron aficionado Alex Henry Foster stripped his usual complex multi-layer musical endeavors and overtly spiritually driven lyrical signature to form a bare-bones 70s rock garage-inspired 4-piece imprint called The Clappers.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the midst of the promotion for his new album, A Nightfall Ritual, I had the opportunity to talk with Canadian artist, poet, and noise sculptor Alex Henry Foster, who ended up spending most of our hour-long phone call talking about his new band, The Clappers.<\/p>

I got so intrigued that I had to call him back. Here\u2019s my conversation with the always-fascinating man behind a multitude of uncanny endeavors.<\/p>

Rolling Stone<\/strong>: I must admit, Alex, knowing you for years now, I\u2019m not surprised that, calling you to write a feature on your upcoming album, A Nightfall Ritual, you would be mostly talking about something entirely unrelated to the object of my call. I would honestly be a little disappointed if it had not been the case.<\/p>

Alex Henry Foster<\/strong>: Really? So I\u2019m that predictable now? That\u2019s not too good for my reputation!<\/p>

RS<\/strong>: No worries, your secret is safe with me, but you got me hooked on that new Clappers project of yours. What is it all about?<\/p>

AHF<\/strong>: It was nothing planned, really. Rather, it’s something that happened naturally one night after I had a conversation with Jeff, Ben, and Stephanie regarding the pompous gimmick and soulless nature that is the music business now. It was an instinctive response to that feeling.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

RS<\/strong>: I heard that! (Alex sent me 2 tracks before I called him back.) It\u2019s a very direct approach. It\u2019s a magistral departure from your artistic signature; it\u2019s drastic. Was it on purpose?<\/p>

AHF<\/strong>: I think music became too dramatically plastic and over produced these days. I needed something that would be the anti-theses of what I can\u2019t relate to anymore. The Clappers emerged from that sentiment.<\/p>

RS<\/strong>: You often mention how much you like 70\u2019s garage\/surf\/punk music a la The Cramps in your interviews over the years, but I never expected you would ever peel off your songs like you did on \u201cCosmic Patrol\u201d and \u201cMexican Walls\u201d. How did those songs come about?<\/p>

AHF<\/strong>: Well, if there\u2019s something you should know about me now, it\u2019s the fact that I don\u2019t operate under rigid corporate rules. I do what\u2019s real and honest for me. I\u2019m not in the pleasing the masses business. And those songs are the perfect embodiment of the freedom I\u2019m cultivating creatively.<\/p>

RS<\/strong>: Speaking of reflection, \u201cCosmic Patrol\u201d reflects on the entire humanity becoming galactic migrants looking for a new place to stay after the destruction of the planet. Are \u201cThe Clappers\u201d a socially charged vehicle for you?<\/p>

AHF<\/strong>: Everything is socially charged now, wouldn\u2019t you say? \u201cCosmic Patrol\u201d is not a raging, politics-infused type of stand; it is a reflection on just how self-destructive we are and how we are letting history repeat itself\u2026<\/p>

RS<\/strong>: I understand. You do mention that the richest will have interstellar cities when the poorest will either die on the planet or be servants for those rich people. That sounds politically charged to me, something we never heard you so clearly about before.<\/p>

AHF<\/strong>: I have always been vocal about inequalities and unfairness by standing for social justice and human rights dignity. But I have always refused to become an activist or to weaponize my work. Everything I do is designed to commune and gather, no matter the differences.<\/p>

RS<\/strong>: On \u201cMexican Walls\u201d you wrote: \u201cbanned the guac, drop your empty glass, raise your burritos, stand up with the mariachi, there\u2019s no wall in Mexico, free the people, lift an avocado\u201d. I humbly never thought I would hear Alex Henry Foster refer to guacamole. No offense, I know it\u2019s an analogy to poverty, but you can admit that it is surprising coming from you.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
